2011 reunion

It looks like the 2011 reunion of the Dalziel High School class of 1974-1980 will take place on Friday 24th June in the Electric Bar, Airbles Road, Motherwell.

Watch this space for further details!

It's happened!

After two or three last minute call-offs, and a couple of no-shows, it ended up that 22 of us (I think it was) turned up at the Electric Bar last night to celebrate 30 years passing since the last of us walked out of Dalziel High School as pupils, and in the process of walking out the door transformed into alleged grown-ups!

In the same vein as the slightly smaller scale version last year, a great time was had by all, and as well as a load of historic images being viewed on the night (who’d have thought so many copies of The Dalzielian still exist!) a fair number of photos were taken by several people.  The group one is on the right (unfortunately we only realised later that two of the girls were off powdering their noses at the time so they aren’t in it – sorry!) and the rest of my own ones have been uploaded to Flickr and marked as private so only people I have listed as friends, or to whom I've sent a link this morning, can see them and they’re hidden to the rest of the world.

It was apparent that everyone I spoke to about it seems to think we should do this every year from now on, and I’m happy to take on the not very stressful task of sending out the odd email about it, so I’ll hopefully be adding more people to the growing list of 1974-1980 FPs.  And in fact that includes a few who were there last night!

So if you fall into the category of having been at Dalziel High School in Motherwell as part of the group who started in 1974 and finished in 1980, even if you weren't part of that group for the whole time, leave a comment here and I'll somehow get back to you with a way to exchange email addresses privately so that they aren't revealed to the world on a Blog!

The ball starts to roll

Well the ball truly is rolling now.  This morning I contacted Dalziel High School and they've very helpfully agreed to add some details about the reunion to the school website, which they'll do as soon as they can.  The jury's out on whether they feel able to provide me with a list of the names of everyone who was in the class of 1974-1980 because of interpretation of the Data Protection Act, but we have 86 names which we remembered as a starting point anyway and the likelihood is that even with a name we're unlikely to be able to track everyone down to make sure they know about it.

The other thing I did today is create a Friends Reunited school reunion on that website, and selected leaving years 1978-1980 which should cover everyone who started in 1974.  The way that site works is that now they've sent invitations to everyone who has registered that they left Dalziel High School in any of these three years, which when you think about it will also cover people a couple of years older and younger than us too, depending on at what stage they left their year.  So 247 people have now been invited!  I've had a quick scan down the names, and most are unfamiliar to me (or are familiar from years above or below) so are clearly from other years, and I've worded the invitation so that it clearly specifies 1974-1980 so, nice as it would be to see some of them I'm sure, we should only get the right people responding.

So now we have this Blog, the Facebook event, Friends Reunited, and the school website publicising our reunion.  But word of mouth is also very important, so send those emails and make those calls and pass relevant contact details to me!

The date's been decided!

Last night four of us met for a couple of drinks in the Electric Bar, and inevitably we talked about the plans for having a big reunion in this, the 30th year since the last of the 1974 – 1980 class of Dalziel left the school.  So we decided on a date.

The venue, well that’s a no-brainer as tradition dictates that it should be in the Electric Bar and the date will be Saturday 12th June 2010, say from 7pm.

The lounge bar is already booked that evening for a 21st birthday party (not us then, perhaps our children!) so the bar can accommodate us and we can have our own area reserved.

We took ages deciding on the date, balancing bank holidays with school holidays with not making it too early or too late in the year, and finally came up with the one chosen which stays away from the school holidays when people may be away, misses Easter Egg, and is fairly close to the date when we actually walked out the door for the last time as pupils.  Hopefully with 5 months notice most will be able to easily add it into the diary and be available.

There haven’t been any proper reunions for our year (as far as I know anyway) and this may be the only big one that ever happens, so please come along if you can.  The small scale one a few attended last year really was genuine fun, a lot more so than I for one expected, so a bigger version can only be even better!

Please pass this information to anyone from our year with whom you’re still in contact, and if you either pass me their email details or ask them to contact me direct, I’ll add them to the circulation list.  I can be contacted by a comment on this Blog, but I don't recommend leaving email addresses for all the world to see, or via Facebook.

I’ve set up a reunion event on Facebook and I’ll do one on Friends Reunited in due course, and of course I’ve set up this Blog which all might help spread the word.

Please join the Facebook group if that’s the sort of thing you’re into, and if anyone wants to be a Blog Author and be able to add relevant posts to this, let me know and I’ll arrange it.  You need a Blogger account but they’re easy to set up and are free!

So, the ball’s well and truly rolling.  Spread the word!
